Assesment & Evaluation of EWIS

Cultivating knowledge and empowering minds for a future of triumph and greatness.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced several key reforms in the evaluation and examination process for the academic year 2020–21 and onwards. These changes are aimed at improving the quality of education, enhancing students’ learning experiences, and aligning assessments with the skills required for success in a rapidly changing world.
The revised assessment structure emphasizes a more comprehensive and holistic approach to evaluating student progress. Below is an outline of the key changes in the CBSE evaluation and examination pattern:

Assessment Structure

The new structure divides the academic session into two terms:
Term 1: First half of the academic year
Term 2: Second half of the academic year
Each term will have its own examination, and the weightage of both terms will contribute to the final marks. Term 1 & 2 will be focused on both Objective Type assessments (e.g., Multiple Choice Questions, or MCQs) and Subjective Type questions (e.g., descriptive and analytical questions).
Term 1: 40% weightage
Term 2: 40% weightage
Internal Assessments, Projects, and Practical Exams: 20% weightage

Types of Examinations

The examination pattern has been redesigned to better evaluate the students’
understanding and analytical skills through a mix of objective and subjective
assessments.

Term 1 Examination:
Mode of Examination: Objective Type (MCQs) & Subjective Type (Descriptive/Short
Answer/Long Answer)
Duration: 90 minutes

Subjects: All major subjects, including Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Languages,
and others
Focus: The Term 1 examination will test students on key concepts and knowledge,
assessing their ability to recall, apply, and analyze information.

Term 2 Examination:
Mode of Examination: Objective Type (MCQs) & Subjective Type (Descriptive/Short
Answer/Long Answer)
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Subjects: Same as Term 1 subjects
Focus: The Term 2 examination will assess students’ deeper understanding, analytical
skills, and their ability to synthesize information.

Internal Assessment and Practical Exams

In addition to the Term 1 and Term 2 examinations, internal assessments will play a significant role in the overall evaluation of students. Internal assessments will account for 20% of the final grade and include:
Project Work
Periodic Tests
Assignments
Participatory Activities and Experiments (for subjects such as Arts, Music, Dance etc.) The internal assessment framework encourages a continuous, comprehensive evaluation of students throughout the academic year. Teachers will monitor students’ progress in both academic and co-curricular activities, and will provide ongoing feedback for improvement.

Changes in Question Paper Pattern

The question paper pattern has been restructured to promote a deeper understanding of the subjects. Some key features include:

Grading System

The CBSE will continue to follow the grading system for both the Term 1 and Term 2 exams, with corresponding grade points based on marks scored. The overall grading scale will reflect the student’s performance across the two terms, internal assessments, and practical evaluations.
Important Note: As per the revised system, students are expected to score a minimum of 33% in each subject (Term 1, Term 2, and internal assessments) to pass. Students who fail to achieve this threshold may need to appear for compartment exams.
